Family Conflict I Dubai I Familosophy
Are Generation Wars Political or Social?
I believe that the concept of generational conflicts is a myth that will never die (or perhaps a perpetual truth). Every generation is influenced by various factors that shape its political and social beliefs, as well as the policies that are implemented by their leaders. Cross-generational finger-pointing is fairly easy, but sitting in the other generational seat and acting as a judge is far more difficult to accomplish.
Is it possible that the Baby Boomers have damaged the US economy (and the planet) for the millenial generation? Bruce Gibney says as much in his book A Generation of Sociopaths: How the Baby Boomers Betrayed America, which is available on Amazon. Gibney blames the Baby Boomers, who have been in control of Congress for decades, for the massive growth in the debt-to-GDP ratio, the underinvestment in infrastructure, and the failure to address global warming. He says that their failure to plan for the future is the root of all of their problems.
In some ways, Dr Beverley Searle, a British academic, agrees, noting that it is politicians' financing decisions that have rendered the welfare state unsustainable, but she rejects the notion that Baby Boomers should be held responsible for the benefits they received.
Furthermore, I believe Gibney is using the categories of "Boomers" and "Millennials" to represent conservatives and progressives, respectively. Boomers' policy methods, which he despises, are conservative policies, and he considers himself to be a progressive. Perhaps it would be better for him to call a spade a spade rather than attempting to pass off a political argument as an intergenerational one.
The Pew Research Center's March report, "The Generation Gap in American Politics," is worth reading for its insights into the generational divide in American politics. However, while it reveals that younger individuals are more progressive, the study does not investigate if there are generational factors at play and if so, what those drivers might be.
Consider the following: Is it true that the older generations in your family are more politically conservative than the younger generations? Is it possible that these differences are driven more by generational impacts than by political differences?
