Covid-19 Roadmap – When can I reopen my enterprise in Scotland?

Originally written by Anna Jordan about Small Business

First Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has set out the first part of her plan to ease lockdown restrictions on individuals and businesses in Scotland.

Like Johnson, Sturgeon focuses on data rather than data, but is more cautious than the PM. It aims for gradual and sustainable development, with at least three weeks between each phase. However, she said, “If the data allows, we will try to speed up the easing of restrictions.”

More details will be announced in mid-March, but here’s what we know so far about Scotland’s Covid-19 roadmap.

Phase 3 – April 5th

Like Johnson’s roadmap, Sturgeon wants to focus on getting the kids back to school first and opening up the economy at a later date.

We could see business restrictions easing early in early April.

  • An extension of what is classified as “essential retail”
  • Click and Collect will continue for non-essential retail
  • Stay at home restriction lifted

Phase 4 – April 26th

By the end of April, Scotland would return to its level system and reopen the economy and society “in a more substantial way”.

  • Gyms, non-essential retail stores, hairdressers, bars and restaurants could be reopened
  • Non-essential work might be allowed in people’s homes

Return to a level system

From the end of April, Sturgeon hopes to move to Level 3 everywhere in Level 4. The content of the level system could be revised, but currently people cannot leave their community area below level 3, which is more restrictive for companies.

No decisions have been made about international travel that will be reconsidered at a later date.

Financial support for companies

Ongoing financial support will be available to businesses and conical support will be provided for those who may still face constraints and lower demand. This includes an ongoing commitment to fund the Strategic Framework Business Fund and to provide level 4 payments for an additional month as companies move down a level. In the meantime, the Scottish Government will work with business associations on current issues.
